PRINCE2 2017 Update

Training deals - PRINCE2 2017 - an update

In January of 2017, AXELOS revealed that a major update of PRINCE2 was being developed and would be implemented later this year. It had been a long time coming, as the last major overhaul of PRINCE2 was in 2009. We are now in July and the update is live! Although the changes to the PRINCE2 courses are not significantly dramatic, the alterations that have been made have been done so thoughtfully and to further improve the practicality and application of PRINCE2 Training. The main focus of change has been on the foundation and practitioner examinations as well as a new edition of PRINCE2 2017 guidance.

What’s changed for the PRINCE2 Foundation exam?

  • The number of questions has reduced from 75 to 60.

  • Trial questions have been removed.

  • The time for the exam remains the same (60 minutes).

  • The pass mark has changed from 50% to now 55%. (33 questions passed out of 60)

  • Removal of negative questions and reducing the number of missing word and list questions.

  • Elements of the PRINCE2 exam have been removed; ones which are deemed not part of core value (e.g. configuration management).

  • The assessment criteria also focuses more on Tailoring and the Seven themes.

What’s changed for the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam?

  • The number of marks of the paper has reduced to 68 questions.

  • The time for the PRINCE2 exam remains the same (2 hours and 30 minutes).

  • The pass mark is around 55% (38 questions passed out of 68%).

  • The exam tests the candidates on all parts of the PRINCE2 method.

  • Questions are specifically on principles. There has been a decrease on the number of questions on management products.

  • An overall reduction on the amount of additional information required to answer questions.

  • Removal of complex question styles.

Another key change is the time the PRINCE2 practitioner certification is valid for. This has changed from 5 years to 3 years. PRINCE2 2009 certifications are still valid for 5 years from the date they were obtained. Currently, for re-certification, one can take the re-registration exam. With PRINCE2 2017, one will need to re-sit the full practitioner examination. However if you are able to hold an active subscription to PRINCE2 for the three years or complete the 45 CPD then you shall remain qualified after the three years.

PRINCE2 2009 is available in 19 languages. Currently PRINCE2 2017 is only available in English. However, Dutch, German, Polish, French, Danish, Norwegian and Italian translations in guidance and exams are the next planned translations. It’s important to note that there will be a period of overlap. Therefore allowing exam candidates a choice between the PRINCE2 2009 and PRINCE2 2017 versions up until the end of 2017. However from January 2018, only the PRINCE2 2017 version will be applicable.
